19-23 décembre

Westwind will be hosting our first Holiday Concert on Tuesday Dec. 20th. We invite parents to come and share in the holiday season and enjoy the creative performances of our students. Through music, drama, dance and spoken word students will captivate you with performances that reflect common themes central to our Canadian cultural celebrations. Separate concerts have been organized as we have limited seating in the gym. The concert for students in Gr. 2 - 5 will take place from 12:10 - 1:10p.m. and the Kdg., Gr. 1 and Gr. 1/2 classes will be performing from 1:25 - 2:00p.m.. We look forward to seeing you on the 20th.

The snow is starting to fall. Thank you for sending your child to school dressed appropriately for the cold weather – a warm jacket, snow pants, boots, gloves/mitts, a winter hat, scarf, neck warmer, etc. It would also be helpful to send in an extra pair of gloves/mitts and extra socks.

Voyage de lecture

The reading program works as follows:

Your child chooses a book in class and brings it home. (French only) He/She may read a library book as long as he/she follows all four steps of the reading log.

1. Your child reads his/her book independently once. (This could take more than a day)

2. Your child reads a part from the same book to an adult for 10 minutes.

3. Your child reads a different part from the same book to an adult or a friend for 10 minutes.

4. Your child fills out a reading comprehension sheet.

*When all four steps are completed, you will be asked to write the name of the book, the date the reading assignment was completed as well as any comments you may have about your child’s reading or comprehension.   Everything is returned to school and a new book and comprehension sheet will be sent home.

I hope you will enjoy reading with your child!

If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me.

HOMEWORK

Homework

Homework plays am important role in reinforcing the course material covered in class.

I understand that students and their families lead very busy lives. Students are expected to do homework each night. However, should you have something important going on in your family life, please let me know and I can accommodate you. Throughout the year I will update you on the major projects and exams that the students will need to prepare.

Here are some of the components you can expect.

Reading Program: In French, most of the reading will be done in class, but please encourage your child to read in French as it is a good way to learn a second language. I do expect the children to read at least 10 minutes in French each day.  In my opinion, this is the most important homework assignment that I give.  The only way to become a better reader is to practice reading.  It also helps with vocabulary development of a second language.
